Cause
A case in which an ITIN does not match IRS database
Resolution
- Verify the SSN by acquiring a copy of the above mentioned documents. Ensure the accuracy of the last name and number are exactly as they appear on the Social Security card. If correct, the problem is most likely an error on the government’s end. Call the Social Security Administration (SSA) at 1-800-772-1213 to verify the primary taxpayer’s Social Security number, name and date of birth.
- *Contact IRS to verify what SSN they have on file. The IRS Support Line is 800-829-1040. Identify the issue and verify what they have on file. According to E-file.com, once the IRS accepts the corrections to a last name or Social Security number, it can require up to 15 days for the updated records to be made effective.
