Filing the State Return prior to the Federal Return 

The following steps provide how to file the State Return before filing the Federal Return:

1. Open the tax return to select for state electronic filing. 
2. Complete the Federal Tax Return including Form 8879. 
   

    NOTE:  Although the Federal Return is not being transmitted at this time, the state EF forms rely on information from Form 8879. 
    On the tax return toolbar, click Add Form. 

3. On the State Tab, click the state to electronically file and add a state electronic filing declaration form, usually Form 8453. 
4. Complete the state electronic filing declaration form and verify that there are no errors.  
5. Click Transmit and uncheck Transmit Federal. 
6. Click Send to queue any checked states for transmission.
