Verification Error: Dependent cannot be claimed if taxpayer is dependent of another.

Symptoms

When opening a return the following verification error appears: 

’Dependent cannot be claimed if taxpayer is dependent of another.’

  

 

Cause

This issue occurs when a taxpayer that is marked as a dependent of another person tries to claim dependents on their return.

 

Resolution

If the taxpayer is not the dependent of another taxpayer, use this resolution:

1. In the return, use the Attached Forms list to open the Client Data screen.
2. On the Client Data screen, remove the X from the Dependent field, then select Enter.
   
   

   
   
   

3. Save and verify the return. The verification error will be resolved.
   
   

If the taxpayer is the dependent of another, and is unable to claim dependents of their own, use this resolution:

1. In the return, use the Attached Forms list to open the Client Data screen.
2. Remove all dependents.
3. Save and verify the return. The verification error will be resolved.
