Windows Security Message: These files can’t be opened

Symptoms

When attempting to open a file, a Windows security message appears:

’These files can’t be opened’

 

Cause

This behavior can occur when attempting to open a file that has been downloaded from the Internet or otherwise copied from another computer. Windows sometimes places a security block on the file, preventing it from being opened.

 

Resolution

If the file is from a reputable source, unblock the file using the steps below.

1. Locate the file using Windows Explorer.
2. Right click on the file and select Properties. A file properties window will open.
3. On the general tab of the file properties window, check the Unblock check box and click OK.

   

    

4. Run the file again. The Windows security issue should be resolved.
